Is there a new Thrash Metal powerhouse coming to town? I think so.

Mourning High Origins

Mourning High is a young Thrash Metal band from Tempe, Arizona. Initially gaining traction on Tik-Tok through comedic videos about bands such as Metallica and Megadeth, they have went on to release 3 EPs for a total of 6 tracks. The cornerstone of Mourning High’s success has been their dedicated marketing through their official Tik-Tok account, which currently boasts 54 thousand followers and over 2.5 million total likes.

Self-Titled EP

My first experience with Mourning High was their self-titled EP, released March 23, 2023, featuring two songs, “Mourning High” and “Crowd Control”. Going into this record I wasn’t sure what to expect due to the nature of most ‘Tik-Tok Artists’. However, I was extremely happy with this short but punchy EP.

The standout for me was Crowd Control, now with over 126 thousand plays on Spotify. Crowd control features a brutally fast main riff that feels like candy for the ears. Accompanied by Dave Mustaine-esque vocals, the track feels like a popular early 90s thrash record.

Moving Forward

Mourning High has gone on to produce two more EPs since their self titled, none garnering the attention that Crowd Control received, but continuing to impress listeners musically. One of the band’s strengths, which may seem uncharacteristic for a thrash metal outfit, is the quality of mixing and mastering on early projects. All of Mourning High’s releases feature a tight, professional mix, with a punchy guitar and perfect thrash vocals.

Its safe to say that Mourning High is a band to watch as time goes on. I believe that with time and effort this band can push Thrash Metal forward and perhaps take the crown as the face of the Thrash in the new generation, something desperately needed.
